News Page. Latest happenings, and odd items. Your comments welcomed! There is room for your pictures and stories here, but only if you send them! Plus a couple of questions for you.
Rockets! Really effective rocket weapons were available in WW2 for the first time. They became the subject of great interest to the major powers and the basis of much of the Cold War weaponry.
Orford Ness. Secret military site from WW1 to the end of the Cold War. Unique natural setting for many odd things! Both the National Trust and Cobra Mist sites covered.
Desperate Times. Britain created a guerrilla force to tackle the Nazi invasion. It never came, but the Auxiliary Units were ready in case it did. Men who could go to ground and keep themselves ready to attack the invader wherever they could.
Pillboxes. The many unique constructions around the UK are vanishing steadily. See them now while you can. They were to be part of the last line of defence for much of the country.
Nuclear Weapons and Chemical Weapons. Some of the infrastructure for chemical and nuclear war remains, if you know where to look! Pictures and details of bombs moved here.
World War 2 relics World War two relics are still there to be found. From small and easily missed items to the huge fuel and bomb stores.
Cold War relics The Cold War has left behind some very impressive remains. Bunkers, weapons stores and so on. The opponents are talking now, but these things speak eloquently on their own. RSG4 Cambridge. Includes Bawdsey radar mast, now demolished!
RAF Alconbury a large airfield used by WW2 and Cold War forces for half a century. Closed but near complete.
RAF Uxbridge, 11Grp. Ops. room. This little known bunker, 60 feet underground, is where much of the Battle of Britain was controlled from.
Codename: PADDOCK The other Cabinet War Rooms. Secret and forgotten for half a century, this is Churchill's Secret Bunker.
RAF Wyton Another expansion period and V bomber airfield, still in use, but not for the old purposes.
RAF Bentwaters Former RAF and USAF WW2 and Cold War airfield. Famous for a number of things including Warthogs, Aliens, Ducks... Ducks? Read on!
Airfield remnants Not all the airfield remains are easily recognisable. Here are some examples of what is to be found. Under construction! Starting with Shepherds Grove and some new pictures. Pictures of the SSA at RAF Wittering.
Protected Civil Sites Bunkers were not the sole preserve of the military. Local authorities were compelled to have them during the Cold War and there were public air raid shelters and so on.
WW2 Forward Filling Depot, and HE Bomb Stores. Bombs were supplied to airfields during WW2 from bomb stores close to groups of airfields. There was also a small number of mustard gas bomb filling plants or Forward Filling Depots at some sites. Lords Bridge, and Norton Disney are shown here.
Museums There are many good museums around, with military interest from WW2 and the Cold War. Some of the best are shown here.
